The U.S. EPA has released renewable identification number (RIN) generation data for March, reporting that more than 1.56 billion RINs were generated during the month, including nearly 20.98 million cellulosic RINs.

Approximately 20.38 million D3 cellulosic biofuel RINs were generated in March, bringing the net total for the first three months of the year to 41.7 million. Nearly 3.62 million D3 cellulosic RINs were generated for ethanol during the first quarter of the year, along with 25.88 million for renewable compressed natural gas and 12.2 million for renewable liquefied natural gas. Approximately 34.45 million D3 RINs were generated domestically, with 7.25 million generated by importers.

EPA data shows 599,366 D7 cellulosic diesel RINs were generated in March, bringing the net total for the first quarter of the year to 648,642. According to the EPA, 7,296 D7 RINs were generated for cellulosic diesel during the first three months of this year, with 641,356 generated for cellulosic heating oil. The data also indicates 7,296 D7 RINs were generated domestically, with 641,346 generated by importers.

More than 9.19 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs were generated in March, bringing the net total for the first quarter of 2018 to 22.05 million. Nearly 5.92 million D5 RINs were generated for ethanol, with 9.12 million generated for naphtha, 1.21 million generated for heating oil, 6.18 million generated for nonester renewable diesel, and 123,583 for renewable compressed natural gas. According to EPA data, all 22.55 million D5 advanced biofuel RINs generated so far this year were generated domestically.

More than 1.23 D6 renewable fuel RINs were generated in March, bringing the net total for the first three months of the year to 3.64 billion. Most, 3.58 billion, have been generated for ethanol, with 66.99 million generated for nonester renewable diesel. Approximately 3.57 billion D6 RINs have been generated domestically so far this year, with 2.94 million generated by importers and 66.99 million generated by foreign entities.

Nearly 299.88 million D4 biomass-based diesel RINs were generated in March, bringing the net total for the first quarter of the year to 767.97 million. The majority, 611.2 million, were generated for biodiesel, with 165.32 million generated for nonester renewable diesel and 770,401 generated for renewable jet fuel. Nearly 650.94 million D4 RINs have been generated domestically so far this year, with 56.78 million generated by importers and 69.58 million issued by foreign entities.

As of the end of March, the EPA estimates nearly 4.54 billion RINs have been generated so far this year, with 142.16 million retired, 134.95 million locked and available, and 4.26 billion unlocked and available.
